storeitoffsite Online Backup Manager (OBM) is a client-side backup application that comes with the Hyper-V dedicated backup modules for backing up Hyper-V's virtual machines. storeitoffsite Offsite Backup Server (OBS) is a backup server application for storing all the backup data. Simply install the OBM on the Hyper-V host machine you intend to back up.
After proper configuration, the OBM will automatically spool out the selected virtual machine snapshot images, calculate incremental delta changes, encrypt and compress the changes, and then back them up to the OBS according to the defined backup schedule. The following examples illustrate the steps for backup and restore of the virtual machines in a Hyper-V host server.
Backing up Hyper-V is easy
Use the OBM to backup the virtual machines on Hyper-V host server by taking the following steps:
Simply create an MS VM Backup Set in the Online Backup Manager (OBM) client-side backup application.
Enter an appropriate name for the backup set, e.g. Hyper-V Backup, and choose the version for your Microsoft Hyper-V Server.
Select the corresponding virtual machines for backup.
Alternatively, you can also select individual virtual disk for backup by expanding the corresponding virtual machine sub tree. When backing up individual virtual disk, configuration files of the virtual machine are also backed up.
However, for backing up virtual machine with snapshot, backing up the entire VM is highly recommended, instead of just individual virtual disk(s).
Configure the backup schedule, encryption setting, and that's it. Once completed, the backup job will start automatically.
Restoring Hyper-V virtual machine is just a few clicks away
Simply choose the corresponding backup set that you have created for the Hyper-V Backup.
Select the virtual machines to be restored and choose [Original Location] for restore files to.
Click the [Start Restore] button to begin the restore process.
User will be prompted if a virtual machine selected to be restored exist on the hypervisor. For restoring existing virtual machine (restoring a previous version), the existing virtual machine will be removed before the restore process begin.
When the restore process is completed, the virtual machines will be restored to the original hypervisor.
Open Hyper-V Manager, click Start, Administrative Tools and click Hyper-V Manager.
Under Virtual Machines, right click on the newly restored virtual machine, select [Setting].
Modify settings which may be conflicting with other existing virtual machines (e.g. network setting).
Start the virtual machine afterward. If the following error is displayed during the startup, please remove the Saved State of the corresponding virtual machine.
In Hyper-V Manager, right click on the corresponding virtual machine and select [Delete Saved State], start the virtual machine again afterward.
